Please Ponder This
We know every local congregation is to be fully functional according to the DIVINE pattern. Paul gave Timothy and Titus a charge; a command to appoint; draw men out of the flock in order that they be known as men who are ORDAINED by the HOLY SPIRIT to Shepherd the flock; serve as elders.
We must learn that the Bible gives SPECIFIC credentials for those calling themselves ‘elders’ or ‘deacons’. We must not ignore BIBLE credentials. The Mormons send out well groomed young men who wear black name tags with white lettering identifying them as ‘elder’ so-and-so. Also, at the age of 12, a Mormon boy can be admitted into the “priesthood of Aaron;” as a ‘deacon.’ SPECIFIC Bible credentials show that this abuses these Bible terms and offices. Why do I say that?
CAN A TWELVE YEAR OLD BOY BE A DEACON?
God’s Word completely furnishes us with all truth; (2 Timothy 3:16, 17) which includes the credentials of deacons. These credentials are found in First Timothy 3 and Titus 1. Let’s ask ourselves, “Does a 12 year old boy qualify to be a deacon?” “Deacons MUST be the HUSBANDS of one wife …” (1 Timothy 3:12). How many 12 year old boys do you know who are married? So, to appoint a boy; or older man for that matter; to be a deacon who is NOT MARRIED is to defy a specific order from God.
Another SPECIFIC is; “…ruling their CHILDREN and their OWN houses well.” (1 TIMOTHY 3:12) How many 12 year old boys do you know who are married AND have CHILDREN AND rule well their OWN HOUSES? Using Bible terms; but perverting their true meaning is clearly against God and His Will.
WHAT ABOUT “YOUNG” ELDERS?
The basic meaning of the word “elder” suggests a mature age; an older man; as opposed to younger man. To call a young man; between 19 and 25 yrs of age “elder;” is on the surface, strained; a huge stretch; a bend of logic; a breech of God’s truth. More important; to say Mormon elders are equal with Bible qualified elders is even more unfounded. Why do I say that?
First, Mormon elders may be single; while true Bible fit elders must be married men. It reads like this, “…the husband of one wife; having children who believe.” (Titus 1:6, NASB). So, men who fit the Bible credentials are married men with children; who are believers! Friend, we cannot make use of Bible terms and ignore their proper and scriptural use and still call them truth; and be pleasing to God.
We could meet God’s approval if we would get back to calling Bible things by Bible names and doing Bible things in Bible ways! “Therefore to him who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.” (James 4:17)
