You Made Your Bed, Now Lay in it

Ever hear that statement before? I believe this old saying to be a profound chimney corner quote. It expresses a simple Bible principle in parabolic form. God’s way of saying it is by the Apostle Paul, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked; for whatsoever man sows that shall he also reap,” (Gal. 6:7).

We sometimes sing “You will Reap What You Sow” which is taken from Paul’s warning in to the Galatians. We glean from it that we must carefully choose the type of seed we sow in this life, because the harvest will in fact come.

Even the thoughts we entertain and the words we speak grow into deeds which produce results. Those results may either be blessings or curses. There is one thing we can certainly count on in this life and that is, that our actions produce results.

Paul continues in Galatians 6:8, “He that sows to the flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that sows to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.” That’s why the song teaches that, we should sow “seeds of the kingdom along the fertile way for a harvest pure and white at the last great day.”

It seems to me we need to learn what Paul and Isaiah agree upon. Isaiah says, “Our bed can become shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it; and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it,” (Isa. 28:20).

James is inspired to address this situation also when he adds, “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown brings forth death,” (James 1:14-15). James understands that ‘as we make our bed, we must lie in it’ or ‘we will reap what we sow.’

Sleeping in the bed we make or reaping what we sow is not always immediate, but we must understand for sure, it is for certain!

We “must appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that everyone may receive the things done in his body, according to that he has done, whether it is good or bad,” (2 cor. 5:10).

Question; Will our thoughts, speech and actions afford us a good rest or are our beds too short and our cover too narrow?
